Thank you so much for visiting my site and taking the time to read about me. I grew up always making something - painting, felt doll clothes, all kinds of crafts, and sewing. It was learning to crochet for Girl Scouts that a fascination for yarn and the amazing things that can be done with a hook took hold of me and never let go.
Fiber arts remained a hobby that I practiced on and off as life moved forward. Marriage, a child and full time work occupied the majority of my life back then.
Just before I left my last full time job in 2001, I discovered freeform crochet. A light bulb went on in my brain and heart. There was no looking back.
In 2006 I opened a yarn shop in suburban Houston, Texas. For the next eleven years I played with yarn everyday. It was an exciting and exhausting time. One of the amazing outcomes of that time was the opportunity to be exposed to so many talented people through whon I learned spinning, weaving and felting.
I was also fortunate enough to be published in two books with Leisure Arts and several patterns for Interweave Press.
Owning the shop also allowed me to meet other crochet professionals and learn so much about the business of yarn. But, in the end I was ready for a change; a little more flexibility with my life and time.
Now, I work from home dyeing fiber as The Twisted Spindle. I have a passion for making my own yarn. This is particularly important for my fiber art. I use primarily local Texas wool which I prepare and spin into just the right yarn for whatever piece I am currently envisioning.
One of my biggest joys in the shop was helping others discover their creative side. I have taught unknown numbers of people to knit, crochet, spin, weave, and felt. I can teach beginners to do all these things, but it is crochet where my skills soar.
Freeform is an artistic method for creating crochet fabric. There are as many ways to do it as there are crocheters in the world. I try to reduce the stress and encourage an atmosphere of fun. After all, our hobby should be fun, shouldn’t it?
I believe that within each of us is a seed of creativity that is just waiting to be nurtured into a seedling. I see that as my job as a teacher. I sincerely hope our paths will cross one day and we can get crafty together.
The Twisted Spindle is my other business devoted to hand spinning yarn.
